Discovering the Magic of Paris: A Traveler's Guide
Paris is the first European city I traveled to. I was in college and a friend was an au pair. I had never been on a plane by myself before. In fact the only other times I had ever been on a plane to this point was twice - both to go to Disney World in Orlando. Because of this, Paris will always hold a special place in my heart for giving me that travel bug.
Paris is a timeless tapestry woven with history, art, and romance. Each arrondissement unveils unique treasures, from the graceful arches of the Louvre to the charming streets of Montmartre, where artists once thrived.
I love walking along the Seine. I feel so European. I love walking over the lock bridge (yes I have left a lock there…somewhere) or sitting in a café with a croissant which is unlike anything we get in the States. Whether it's your first visit or a familiar return, Paris promises an enchanting experience long after you've departed.
Must-See Landmarks
1. The Eiffel Tower
No trip to Paris is complete without a visit to the Eiffel Tower. This iconic structure is 1,083 feet tall and offers breathtaking views in every direction. My first time in Paris I did not go to the top because, and I remember this vividly, the woman who owned the house where my friend was an au pere said “only tourists do that.” I was torn between the fact that I was a tourist with the fact that I did not want to be a tourist. How great would it be to have been born amongst all the beauty that Paris has to offer!
Consider visiting during the evening when the tower is illuminated. No matter the time of day you decide to visit, be sure to get tickets in advance, as the lines are incredibly long! For a unique experience, book a dinner at one of the restaurants located in the Eiffel Tower itself. Madame Brasserie is located on the first floor. Le Jules Verne is a splurge-worthy Michelin-starred restaurant that offers a prix fixe menu. Both required reservations, which must be made well in advance. Jules Verne offers a lunch menu for those who cannot afford the dinner option!
2. The Louvre Museum
Home to thousands of works of art, including the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo, the Louvre is a treasure trove for art lovers. Plan your visit beforehand and consider purchasing "skip the line" tickets online to avoid a long wait time. For those of you who want to see the museum's highlights on an expedited basis, consider booking a guided tour with one of the many tour companies operating in Paris.
3. Notre-Dame Cathedral
Finally reopened in December, after the devastating fire in 2019 (by the way, I was in Paris on the day of the fire and watched the spire fall from the lock bridge), Notre Dame remains a symbol of Parisian history and resilience. Due to the many anticipated visitors in 2025, use the advanced reservation system to avoid long times. While visiting Notre Dame, stroll along the Seine River to admire the cathedral's stunning façade while visiting the numerous vendors nearby.
4. Montmartre and the Basilica of Sacré-Cœur
Montmartre is a bohemian neighborhood with an artistic history, charming streets, and vibrant cafés. Climb the steps to the Basilica of Sacré-Cœur for panoramic city views. Spend time exploring the area, visiting the Place du Tertre, where artists display their work, and indulging in delicious pastries at local bakeries.
Hidden Gems to Explore
1. Le Marais
This historic district is known for its narrow medieval streets, trendy boutiques, and cozy cafés. Explore the Place des Vosges, one of the oldest squares in Paris, and visit the Picasso Museum to appreciate the artist's work in an intimate setting. Le Marais is also home to several art galleries and unique shops, making it a perfect place for an afternoon wander.
2. Canal Saint-Martin
Escape the crowds and take a leisurely stroll along the picturesque Canal Saint-Martin. This area has charming cafés and boutiques and offers a glimpse of local Parisian life. Pack a picnic and enjoy lunch by the water, or stop at a nearby café to savor a cup of coffee and people-watch.
3. The Catacombs of Paris
The Catacombs of Paris offer the adventurous traveler a fascinating and eerie experience. This underground ossuary holds the remains of over six million people. Be sure to book your tickets in advance, as entry is limited and lines can be long. The first time I visited, I did not get tickets in advance and regretted it!
Practical Tips for Your Visit
- Transportation: The Paris Métro is efficient and easy to navigate, making it the best way to get around the city. Consider purchasing a Paris Visite pass for unlimited travel on public transport.
- Language: While many Parisians speak English, it's always appreciated when visitors attempt to say a few basic French phrases. A simple "bonjour" (hello) or "merci" (thank you) can go a long way.
- Safety: Like any major city, be mindful of your belongings and stay aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded tourist areas.
